- Plastic bag ban comes into effect
San Francisco’s first-of-its-kind ban on plastic supermarket checkout bags becomes effective November 20, and the City will start enforcing the ban December 1. The Department will provide an email address for residents to report violations.
- Toxic toy avalanche
The State of California adopted a law banning toxic toys, which is very similar to an ordinance adopted first here in San Francisco. Now, it looks as though it may be going nationwide.
- It’s getting hot in here!
If the sea level raises by only about a meter, at AT&T Park the words "hit" and "splash hit" will be interchangeable.
- We’ve got plans for your carcass
Just a friendly reminder: when you’ve finished your Thanksgivings turkey, we’d love to have the carcass…in the green cart, of course. San Francisco makes nearly 350 tons of food scraps and yard trimmings into organic compost every day, and turkey bones help make a particularly nutricious soil.

San Francisco’s compostables collection program takes all kinds of food scraps, as well as yard trimmings.
