The Great Streets Program

The Great Streets Program was created in September 2005 with a simple goal: to create high-quality, well-maintained streets that will bring new economic vitality and build community in San Francisco's neighborhoods. Building on the Better Streets Policy which was adopted in March 2006, the Program has built a new partnership between the Mayor's Office, The Department of Public Works, The Planning Department, and the Metropolitan Transportation Agency (MTA) to design and implement one-time capital investments on a series of streets across the city, demonstrating best practices in street design and the value of landscaping, lighting and pedestrian safety to improving life in our neighborhoods. These projects are funded primarily through a multi-year federal transportation bill called "SAFETEA," which together with local funds, authorized more than $11m in total funding to be spent over the next three years.

Below is a list of current and upcoming Great Streets Projects along with their estimated schedules. Please note that project schedules are preliminary and subject to change.

The San Bruno Avenue Streetscape Improvements Project is a direct result of a comprehensive community planning process to improve the ten city blocks of San Bruno Avenue from Silver Avenue to Mansell Street. The community’s goals and objectives for this plan include: improving the commercial corridor by providing a more pleasant pedestrian experience; making San Bruno Avenue a more inviting, friendly, and a safer environment; balancing the needs of all of the community. The project is comprised of sidewalk improvements on both the east and west sides, including new trees, wider treewells with additional planting, banner poles, banner installation (banners provided by the community) and bollards. The project is now under construction! For more information, please call (415) 437-7018.
