Utility Undergrounding Program
The Bureau of Street Use and Mapping (BSM) in the Department of Public Works is working with PG&E and the Public Utilities Commission to underground public utilities across the city. Once utilities are undergrounded, PG&E is responsible for removing old utility poles and installing new streetlights. Undergrounding has led to the reduction in overhead wiring and general visual clutter on city streets. The current Program is scheduled to be completed in June 2008.
