Air Quality
![]() |
Air quality becomes an environmental justice issue when lower income and racially diverse neighborhoods are subjected to poorer air quality as compared to other neighborhoods. Air pollution is caused by natural sources like dust or man-made sources like motor vehicles, industrial facilities, or common household products: aerosol sprays, paints, and solvents. Because they typically shoulder the burden of close proximity to industrial sites, major highways, and other transportation corridors, lower income and racially diverse neighborhoods are more likely to suffer the impact of air pollution that can cause serious public health problems, particularly in children and the elderly.
