Land Use
![]() |
Urban environmental justice deals with city and regional planning, housing policy, community and economic development, and the availability of parks and green space. Since zoning laws play a significant role in determining where sources of pollution and other potential toxics can be sited, environmental justice becomes an issue in communities that are disproportionately affected by them. Homes in industrial zones usually carry a higher environmental burden than other residential neighborhoods as a result of industry and heavy truck traffic, both of which can release toxic substances into the air, soil, and water-not to mention the accompanying visual blight, offensive odors, and the illegal dumping of hazardous waste.
